PetroCaribe summit adopts new economic and social projects

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (ACN) -- The eighth summit of heads of state and governments of the PetroCaribe regional energy integration bloc concluded on Saturday in Nicaragua after adopting new projects to boost regional economic development and social investment in the fields of education, food and health.

During the summit’s closing session, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the objectives of the forum were largely met in favour of integration and the fight on poverty.

The leaders of the region noted that PetroCaribe is the result of the humane and supportive spirit of the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and former Cuban president Fidel Castro, who were the creators of PetroCaribe and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our Americas (ALBA) regional integration bloc.

The PetroCaribe summit adopted the increase of investment in the sectors of maritime and air transportation, tourism, trade telecommunications, and production.

The forum adopted three plans of action, aimed at the eradication of illiteracy and the improvement of the quality of education and cultural instruction; the expansion of the free-eye-surgery program known as Operation Miracle, and the enhancement of food production programs.

Maduro announced that when Venezuela assumes the pro-tempore presidency of the South Common Market (Mercosur) on July 12, other initiatives will be proposed in order to consolidate a large economic and social development zone in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Venezuelan president stressed the need to gather the efforts of PetroCaribe, Mercosur, and ALBA, which would involve 24 countries in a significant integration platform.
