UWP says government is misleading nation over refund on imported barrel concessions:
The executive of the United Workers Party has
called for an explanation over a proposed refund from government to
people who were charged the Value Added Tax (VAT) on barrels imported under the concessionary period.
According to a UWP statement, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Jadia Emmanuel, during the live call in programme, News Maker Live on DBS last Wednesday night claimed that a press statement was issued to inform Saint Lucians a refund was available. However, the UWP said it has not seen any information on the press secretary’s Facebook page, nor any of the social media outlets, which are managed by the press secretary to prove her claims.
“When the error was exposed in the last sitting of the House dated February 11, 2014, the prime minister blatantly spoke untruths claiming that he had just confirmed with the comptroller of customs that the observation made by the Member of Parliament for Castries South-East, Guy Joseph was a lie – yet, the same day, just moments after, a memo dated February 11, 2014, coming from the Office of the Prime Minister was sent to the comptroller of customs advising him of the error,” the UWP statement indicated.
The UWP believes had it not been for Joseph’s “impeccable observation”, many Saint Lucians who had been charged full duties on barrels cleared at customs after January 31, 2014 would have never received a refund.

UWP CALLS FOR JOINT DONORS CONFERENCE
UWP Political Leader Allen Chastanet |
CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Monday, January 6, 2014 – The Political Leader of the United Workers Party, Mr. Allen Chastanet has called on the Governments of the three islands which suffered extensive damage as a result of the Christmas Eve (December 24th) trough weather system, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica, to convene a joint Donors Conference in order to mobilize support Regionally and Internationally for the re-construction effort in the three countries. Mr. Chastanet expressed the view that the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia should take the initiative in piloting moves for such a conference which could be coordinated by the Saint Lucia based OECS Secretariat.
The Political Leader said that the damage arising from the recent weather system, underscored the vulnerability of the region as a whole to natural disasters which result in widespread economic and social dislocation. He further added that the aftermath of the disaster provided an opportunity for a collaborative effort in, not only reconstruction, but in finding solutions to the common problems that we face and in the interest of the long term sustainability of these islands. He noted that the countries are all part of an OECS Economic Union, and that even before the disaster, they faced serious social and economic challenges which have been compounded by the extensive damage to infrastructure and private property across the islands. He particularly lamented the loss of life for which he once again extended condolences to all those affected.
